UVA Lockdown: Cops Search For Career Criminal (Updated)

Students and staff at the University of Virginia have been advised to shelter in place as police search for a wanted suspect with a reported criminal past.

At around 9 a.m. on Tuesday morning, an alert was issued by UVA Police amid a search for a suspect later identified as Nyheem Hill in the Alderman area.

According to police, Hill fled from a traffic stop, has a known criminal history and gang affiliation. 

Virginia State Police said that shortly before 8:15 a.m. on Tuesday, a trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop on Fontaine Avenue for an expired inspection sticker.

The driver refused to stop, took the Ivy Road exit, slowed, and fled from the vehicle while it was still in drive, which ultimately struck a police cruiser and second vehicle.

Hill has no known association to UVA.

No shots were fired and no injuries have been reported. As of 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday morning, the shelter in place order was still in effect.
